About the Book

Curling for Beginners and Improvers is a fun introduction and how-to guide for the sport of curling.

The book is the perfect complement for an on-ice learn-to-curl program, and will go into more depth on certain skills and elements of the game than a typical in-person session can cover. And if you’re not able to find in-person instruction, the book stands on its own to help someone new to the sport get started.

As the title implies, it is for beginner curlers, and those looking to improve their game. The focus is on the basics of delivering a stone, sweeping (including directional brushing), and playing skip and vice (including a very basic intro to strategy). Helpful diagrams help round out the descriptions and instructions, as do some personal anecdotes.

Curling is a fascinating sport, full of contradictions, where heavy granite stones are slid great distances on ice, but with such great precision that sweeping a broom across the path can make the difference between a great shot and a miss. It’s a friendly, social sport played by all ages, and one of the few where multiple generations of a family can play on the same team.

This site will help complement the book, with links within collected for easier following (links are especially hard for the hardcopies), and an errata page where any errors to be corrected or updates will be posted. A few behind-the-scenes blog posts are also available.
